MINI RUGBY
Mini Rugby is an exciting version of the game aimed at developing
coordination, teamwork and sportsmanship. As with all other levels
of the game the players are actively encouraged to clap each other
after the game and give three cheers to the opposition and referee.
During the play the players have the benefit of their coach running
slightly behind them encouraging them to learn to think before
acting. At all times the word of the referee is final and respect
for this authority is key to the Ethics of Rugby Football. Mini Rugby
is a non-contact version where the player is tackled by being tapped
simultaneously on both hips.
Players begin Mini Rugby at the under seven age group (i.e. those in year
two at school). We are presently running a mixed group of 7's and 8's.
The club provides each player with full coaching from qualified coaches
on weeks when we do not have competitive fixtures. Even at fixtures
every opportunity is taken to develop the players understanding of the
game. Mini rugby develops in complexity from age 7 through to 9 where
real Rugby Tackles are introduced. At every stage of the development
the coaches ensure that the players learn the correct methods to safely
compete in a contact sport.
