JUNIOR RUGBY
Junior Rugby is the beginning of a players introduction to the
brotherhood of the game. Key features of the game are the need for
various skill sets, physical shapes and attitudes which help to
develop true team playing skills. As with all other levels of the game
the players are actively encouraged to clap each other after the game
and give three cheers to the opposition and referee. The coaches are
now becoming more advisory and can only 'barrack' their teams from
the touchline. At all times the word of the referee is final and
respect for this authority is key to the Ethics of Rugby Football.
Junior Rugby is a contact version where the players are allowed full
physical confrontation under the rules of the game.
Players begin Junior Rugby at the under nine age group (i.e. those in
year four at school). The game is played between teams of up to 10 at
under nine and ten, moving up to 12 at under 11 and 12 with full 15's
at under 13 upwards. The club provides each player with full coaching
from qualified coaches on weeks when we do not have competitive
fixtures. We have extensive equipment such as tackle bags, contact
pads etc to ensure that body position and technique is refined before
bad habits cause injury. Even at fixtures every opportunity is taken
to develop the players understanding of the game.
